Sugar House Dance is a community organization dedicated to the performance of, preservation of, and education about vernacular and/or social dancing in the mid-Michigan area. Rather than training dancers in competition level and/or style of dance, our aim is to create vibrant communities of social dancers. Our current emphasis is on jazz vernacular dance, specifically in the blues and swing genres. As part of our mission, we offer free beginner drop-in lessons in both styles, three hour open dances for both styles at minimal cost, and occasional workshops to provide instruction in more advanced moves and concepts, train dance instructors and DJs, and empower individuals in neighboring areas to start and continue to develop their own dance communities.
Lessons and open dances happen on the first and third Fridays of the month for blues, with swing on the following Saturdays. All regular events take place at AA Creative Corridor (1133 S. Washington Ave, Lansing MI 48910) in the REOTown District. For exact dates please check our calendar.
We are registered with the State of Michigan and undergoing the process of filing for 501(c)3 Non-profit status at the federal level, and operate under the supervision of a Board of Directors chosen from within our dance community. The Board meets on average of once a month, with one meeting a year open to the public.
